yes, both the filter and the group settings get saved and exported with a layout. there’s no trick, just save the layout and what ever your group settings were will get saved as well.
be aware that if you are grouping by something like a project activity code, then the group settings may not work unless you are opening exactly the same project. fyi

so far, it seems only the filters can be added to a layout but not the grouping option. or maybe i’ve just not found out how.
can you help?

i guess i did not. filters can be saved in a layout .plf file, then exported and re-imported. but if the filter refers to any udfs (user defined fields), the filter will not be imported properly. that’s all i have for you.

that’s likely. if the layout has filters that are based on data that only exists in that project (like project codes or project activity codes), then that may be your problem.

samuel, try using “save as” to save your layout – then choose “all users”. this will save the layout as global and make it available to all projects. i suspect you have been saving it as a project layout – just a guess.

thank you for your posts.
i am learning primavera for the first time to work as a schedule analyst for a construction claims consultancy. due to my work nature, i do not create new schedules but rather import schedules from our clients for analysis. most of the schedules i import come without any layout form (group or sort). so i usually have to group and sort them either by activity codes or wbs. but i have a major problem e.g. i currently have imported 15 xer project files of a client representing the 15 different updates the schedule underwent throughout the same project. but i realise that when i save a layout of a particular grouping and sorting activity code for one of the project files in a particular format, i cannot open the other file updates with that layout i have saved. therefore, i have to apply the same grouping and sorting to each individual schedule update whenever i am analysing a different project update. why is my layout not being applied to the other projects? i hope my question is understandable? am i not saving my layouts well? or am supposed to add a filter? i need assistance. also can you advise me on the areas of primavera i need to concentrate my efforts on to be able to analyse schedules?
thanks

i appreciate your comments… and yes the tutorial is a bit light and doesn’t really discuss filters. and i see the dilemma with moving filters across databases. i agree that there should be more options in the software to handle these situations so that filters move properly. i will put take this away and see what i can come up with for a future tutorial.
thanks for commenting!

about the plf file import/export, i think your tutorial is a little bit light.
maybe i could give you my own feedback on this subject.

indeed the main problematic about this function isnt to reach it, but more to make the *filters effective in several pm db. i mean when you create a filter in a pm environment, pm automatically add a line in the filter tab of mssql/oracle db. like for an activity/project/世界杯时间比赛时间 ect.. id this number is unique.

the thing is, when you import the plf, you import a connexion of your filter/bar functions with the filter number parameter for your db.
when you import a plf, this number (from an outside db) never fits with your own db…. so your effective filter (in filter or bars functions) isn’t good (even if the name is ok the data inside aren’t).

that’s the main issue & limitation. i haven’t find any satisfying solution except the “copy as layout” function. this solution isn’t totally satisfying because you duplicate at a given moment the filter targeted – like a photo – & can be really long…
at the moment the duplication is effective, the never filter created has its status changed to layout filter which make it independent from the native filter –> and so you loose the dynamic power of the layout* (*the fact that you can use a global filter in a thousand of layouts & when you modify it once the modification is effective for the whole layout!!! which is really useful).

i’m not sure to be clear in my explanations, sorry for my english,

i wish you an happy new year & thanks you for sharing your knowledge
