hi. quite a bit has changed from 8.3 to 16.2. i recommend you export from your 16.2 db in 8.2 format (or even 8.0) and try to import that to your 8.3 db.

hi ayman,
prime is not a replacement for p6. it is a higher-level tool at the moment, but prime is also a container for packages that will become part of prime. just like sap has a planning package, an invoicing package, etc, prime works the same way with packages or modules.
unifier is a contract management and financial package, so neither of these are core cpm scheduling tool like p6. i would say an organization would use them in collaboration with each other.

hello michael,
i am using p6 version 8.3 and the company want to get primavera prime or primavera unifier. my understanding is p6 is more powerfull for planning, scheduling and cost managment, and prime is a high level tool.
my question is can prime replace p6 or both can be used?

i’m not 100% positive but i think you do have to go to 15.x first. i’ve had problems in p6 professional upgrading a db from 8.2 to 16.2 and have had to move it first to 15.x, then to 16.2.

i am using 8.2.2.1 version of p6 eppm. now i wish to ugrade to p6 16.2 eppm.
please update me as there are any hierarchies (8.2.2.1–>15.2–>16.2) to be followed to upgrade to 16.2 from 8.2.2.1 or else i can do it directly from 8.2 to 16.2.

regards,
ramanathan

hi tim,
this is likely due to the location of the database file. it’s usually under c:\users\… thus the upgrade stumbles on windows security. try it again, but first, right-click on primavera p6 and run it as administrator, then proceed with the upgrade.

that means your database was not updated during the upgrade. i recommend you read the admin docs to sort out the right way to approach a fix. here’s a link: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/documentation/primavera-093289.html

update nov 11 – looks like this is a bug in p6. there’s a patch (16.2.1) that can be downloaded that fixes the problem. here’s a link to the patch on oracle’s site: https://updates.oracle.com/orion/services/download/p24971206_162000_generic.zip?aru=20722389&patch_file=p24971206_162000_generic.zip

update: here’s 2 things to check:
1) this can occur if the excel file was exported by a user with different user settings than the user importing the file. if the units/time format was set to percentage, for example, when the export occurred, then imported by a user whose units/time format is set to units/duration, this message will appear.
you will have to change your user prefs to get the import to work.

2) the userdata worksheet tab is missing from the excel file being imported into project management.
if this is the case, you will have to re-export and ensure the userdata tab is in the worksheet.

hi ramesh,
1) ppm is not a subset of eppm. ppm (or p6 professional) is a standalone tool. however, if you have eppm, then you can connect to the eppm database with a slightly different copy of ppm (also called the optional client for eppm) that only comes with eppm. so ultimately, these 2 tools are independent.

2) ppm is straightforward to install. i would say you can do it yourself.

thanks for your informative article on the latest p6 updates. i am interested to know the following :

1. is ppm a subset of eppm, meaning does eppm have everything that ppm has and more ? or are they mutually exclusive tools, meaning one will need to have ppm even if they have eppm if they want the standard features of ppm like the projects eps, wbs, activities, 世界杯时间比赛时间 , resource assignments, etc. ?

2. can the latest update 16.2 for ppm be downloaded directly online and easily installed by ppm 15.2 owners themselves or do they have to still go through the usual process of getting it done by oracle primavera partners in their location ?

best regards,

ramesh kavassery, pmp

thanks for your effort. i would like to pay your attention that importing excel file in ppm is not working in r16.2, ,even if you import the same file that was exporting from p6 after deleting only one letter from the activity name.
moreover, it gives you message: “the user preferences used to create this excel file are not the same ……….”
what is about eppm? do we have the same bug? and what is the solution?
