hi sean,
try searching for the following “next_data_date” in the xer file. you’ll find the data date on the next line. it’s not super-easy to spot mind you, but it’s in there.

but now i have a question that is irrelevant to this article there is and sdk written by excel macros that can be used for mass import and export to primavera but i can not figure out how to use it for the 64 bit version of primavera 16.1 so if you provide some information regarding this issue i would be very grateful

sahil. you can connect to an eppm database from p6 professional. you just need to put in the right database connection information (on the login screen of p6 professional).

my client is using eppm and so they are stuck with its slow entry/screen refreshes.

i know that we cant import xer into eppm, is there a way to connect eppm to the database of p6 ppm? this way they can enter all project data in ppm and for viewing it then will use eppm.

thanks

nancy, that’s a bit of an unusual situation. since eppm doesn’t use the xer format, and the early versions of professional don’t export to xml, you’re sort of stuck.
my recommendation would be to set up a local install of a newer version of p6 professional (v8 or later) and then import your xers to that local install. you could then export them to xml. i’m not aware of any tool that will do the conversion for you other than p6 professional.

you can remove the pobs from the xer file using a text editor or excel.
save a copy of the xer file and change the extension to txt then open in text editor or excel.
near the top of the file you will see “%t pobs”
delete all rows down until the next “%t”
in my case that is about 60000 rows.

when i make import to any file its talk from me around 1 hour because of pobs importing

hi bill. p6 won’t allow you to control exporting at this level. the only suggestion would be to put their section in a separate project and link them together.

we limit access through the wbs as to what part of the schedule they have access to.
however as they have access, they can then export the entire project which defeats the purpose of limited access.

there was an error in calculating the percentage of ff and ss percentage in the project review sheet. i reported it to the developer and fix it in the code by removing the division by 2.
.cells(7, 8) = cdbl((ss + ff) / (2 * inlink))
should be
.cells(7, 8) = cdbl((ss + ff) / (inlink))

my understanding is this information is not stored in the xer file, but kept in the database, check with admin preference, time period.

but because in general we use the assigned activity calender to convert from hours to days, you can always use the field clndr_id in the task table

some stuff in p6, like tf are pretty strange. instead of lf-ef, it appears to be total_float_hr_cnt / hours per day. for my routines, will use lf-ef, etc.

also intend to include progress curve creation by wbs, etc. directly from the data. i parse both the current and a target xer.

have done before in p3. semi-retired, so doing as a hobby.

thanks, actually i don’t have the xer specification except from the public information provided by oracle; my approach is trial and error but whatever you do, always import the modified xer into a dummy database, as a bad formatted xer can corrupt your database.
1- for the minimum tables,
ermhdr is not really a table but it is like a header for the xer file, that the first thing that p6 will read, if you remove it, p6 will not recognise it as a valid xer file.
the other tables are project, obs, calendar, projwbs ( that’s for a project without tasks).
2- i don’t think the order of the tables is import, as long as the first row is ermhdr and the last row is %e
3- the same for the records, i don’t think the order is important.
4- i am not sure how to get the full specification as it is a proprietary format!!!

mimoune

mimoune! do you have xer specification?

my task is make some automatic manipulation with data contained in xer files.
i already have file “ppmschema.html” with db specification.

how to get additional instructions related to xer file?

(?) which tables (%t) are required (what is a minimum set of tables)?

ex.:
ermhdr …
%t obs
%t udftype
%t project
%t calendar
%t projwbs
%t udfvalue
%e

(?) which order must have tables (%t) in xer file?

(?) typically records (%r) in xer file ordered by alphabet. it is necesery?

(?!) how to get full specification for primavera xer files?

thanks!
