{"id":53496,"date":"2021-01-15t16:45:04","date_gmt":"2021-01-15t21:45:04","guid":{"rendered":"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/?p=53496"},"modified":"2021-04-28t21:27:40","modified_gmt":"2021-04-29t01:27:40","slug":"primavera-p6-v2012-whats-new","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/primavera-p6-v2012-whats-new\/","title":{"rendered":"primavera p6 version 20.12 is out. here&#8217;s what&#8217;s new."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>just before the christmas break, oracle quietly released primavera p6 professional version 20.12. i&#8217;ve had a few days to explore this <a href=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/latest-version-primavera-p6\/\">latest version of p6<\/a>. here&#8217;s what&#8217;s new in primavera p6 professional version 20.12.<\/p>\n<p>in case you forgot, oracle publishes updates to the on-premise version of primavera p6 annually in december. so we&#8217;ve all had a full year to adjust to <a href=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/whats-new-primavera-p6-v1912\/\">primavera p6 version 19.12<\/a> &#8211; and there were a few nice improvements in that version.<\/p>\n<p>but considering all of the new fixes &amp; enhancements in version 20.12 &#8211; all i can say is&#8230;.wow! nice work oracle! add comments directly on relationships<\/h3>\n<p>that&#8217;s right!<\/p>\n<p>we&#8217;ve been asking for it for 100 years, and we&#8217;ve finally got it &#8211; a comment field tied directly to a relationship!<\/p>\n<p>now we can better document relationships, why we added this specific one, <a href=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/find-relationship-lag-primavera-p6\/\">what the lag is for<\/a> &#8211; directly on the relationships tab, with great visibility!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-53504\" src=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/primavera-p6-relationships-comments.jpg\" alt=\"primavera p6 relationships comments\" width=\"720\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/primavera-p6-relationships-comments.jpg 720w, \/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/primavera-p6-relationships-comments-300x158.jpg 300w, \/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/primavera-p6-relationships-comments-600x316.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>the implementation of the is pretty simple. it&#8217;s a new text field called <strong>&#8220;comments&#8221;<\/strong> that was added so you can leave documentation on specific relationships. currently you&#8217;ve got 250 characters to work with.<\/p>\n<p>i also did some testing and saw that within the reports area (only), you can build a report that can group or filter on this comments field.<\/p>\n<p>this is a nice additional feature in primavera p6 version 20.12 and will help contractors and owners reach a new level of transparency around relationships.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>more options when scheduling multiple projects<\/h3>\n<p>if you ever manage multiple smaller projects together as a <a href=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/mega-construction-builds-over-budget-infographic\/\">megaproject<\/a>, you&#8217;ll be able to take advantage of this new p6 v20.12 feature.<\/p>\n<p>when you open 2 or more projects together, you&#8217;ll see some changes to the scheduling options screen. (actually you&#8217;ll see these changes even with 1 project open now, but with 2 or more project open, these options come alive).<\/p>\n<p>at the top of p6&#8217;s scheduling options screen, you&#8217;ll now see the option to choose which project&#8217;s scheduling options to use when scheduling your projects.<\/p>\n<p>as i was investigating this new feature, i got curious &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">does p6 save the scheduling options as they are set with a project in the project itself??<\/p>\n<p>yes it does now.<\/p>\n<p>when you open a project, and make a change to the schedule options, you&#8217;ll be asked if you want to save the options. that&#8217;s new!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-53506\" src=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/p6-save-scheduling-options.jpg\" alt=\"p6 save scheduling options\" width=\"618\" height=\"416\" srcset=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/p6-save-scheduling-options.jpg 618w, \/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/p6-save-scheduling-options-300x202.jpg 300w, \/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/p6-save-scheduling-options-600x404.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>now, in primavera p6 version 20.12, when you&#8217;ve got more than 1 project open, you can then pick which project&#8217;s saved scheduling options to use when scheduling projects together.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-53507\" src=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/p6-scheduling-options-multiproject.jpg\" alt=\"p6 v20.12 scheduling options multiproject\" width=\"618\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/p6-scheduling-options-multiproject.jpg 618w, \/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/p6-scheduling-options-multiproject-300x189.jpg 300w, \/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/p6-scheduling-options-multiproject-600x378.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>this feature will help schedulers keep their <a href=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/new-primavera-p6-settings-video-series\/\">p6 settings<\/a> consistent in a multi-project situation.<\/p>\n<p>there&#8217;s a bit more related to this feature. read on.<\/p>\n<h3>new setting: all projects use their own data date<\/h3>\n<p>oracle has migrated an option that used to only be in <a href=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/p6-eppm-course\/\">p6 eppm<\/a> over to primavera p6 professional in version 20.12.<\/p>\n<p>the option is called <strong>&#8220;all projects use their own data date&#8221;<\/strong> and you&#8217;ll see it on the scheduling screen. again this is applicable when scheduling multiple projects at the same time. you can now choose to set a single data date when scheduling a group of projects, or to let projects keep using their own data date.<\/p>\n<p>one of the trickiest parts of working with sub-projects that combine into a megaproject is around <a href=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/course\/primavera-p6-foundations\/\">data date<\/a>. typically every project would have a different data date. now with this new feature schedulers will have a lot more control over which data date gets used in a multi-project scheduling scenario.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-53508\" src=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/primavera-p6-v2012-schedule-data-date.jpg\" alt=\"primavera p6 v20.12 schedule data date\" width=\"535\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/primavera-p6-v2012-schedule-data-date.jpg 535w, \/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/primavera-p6-v2012-schedule-data-date-300x168.jpg 300w, \/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/primavera-p6-v2012-schedule-data-date-128x72.jpg 128w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 535px) 100vw, 535px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>new codes: resource assignment &amp; role codes<\/h3>\n<p>well, this one i never saw coming.<\/p>\n<p>in fact, there&#8217;s so much in this update, i&#8217;m a bit stymied.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">we&#8217;ve got project codes, <a href=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/how-to-audit-your-primavera-p6-global-activity-codes\/\">activity codes<\/a>, resource codes, and now <strong><a href=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/primavera-p6-how-to-use-assignment-codes-as-cost-accounts\/\">assignment codes<\/a> &amp; role codes!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>yep. in this release of p6, you&#8217;ll find 2 brand new type of codes &#8211; the assignment code &amp; the role code.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">i&#8217;m not to excited about role codes, as i don&#8217;t ever use roles, so let&#8217;s move past them.<\/p>\n<p>you can now use assignment codes to categorize, group and analyze your resource assignments in p6 v20.12.<\/p>\n<p>assignment codes are (wait for it) <strong>global-data<\/strong>, which means they are setup as the enterprise level, not at the project level.<\/p>\n<p>so while this is gives us more reasons to use the resource assignments screen, i&#8217;m a bit concerned about more data that admins will have to <a href=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/clean-up-primavera-p6-database\/\">administer and clean-up<\/a> when importing &amp; exporting projects from their database.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-53513\" src=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/p6-2012-assignment-codes-example.jpg\" alt=\"p6 2012 assignment codes example\" width=\"739\" height=\"491\" srcset=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/p6-2012-assignment-codes-example.jpg 739w, \/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/p6-2012-assignment-codes-example-300x199.jpg 300w, \/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/p6-2012-assignment-codes-example-600x399.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 739px) 100vw, 739px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>above is an example of implementing an assignment code called <strong>&#8220;shift type&#8221;<\/strong> and assigning values to the resource assignments.<\/p>\n<p>another concern for me, is that things are getting confusing. have a look at the resource assignments screen column chooser.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-53514\" src=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/p6-2012-resource-assignment-columns.jpg\" alt=\"p6 20.12 resource assignment columns\" width=\"556\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/p6-2012-resource-assignment-columns.jpg 556w, \/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/p6-2012-resource-assignment-columns-300x179.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 556px) 100vw, 556px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>what do i want here? there&#8217;s a ridiculous amount of &#8220;codes&#8221; and &#8220;user defined&#8221; fields to pick from. how do i know if i want an assignment code or a resource code?<\/p>\n<p>there&#8217;s some great potential for schedulers to get lost in fields and also to misunderstand how they should be used.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>imho assignment codes were added as tool to improve categorizations in p6 eppm (just a hunch). but perhaps there will be good use-cases for this type of coding to come. right now, it&#8217;s not obvious to me how i would use this, or why.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>new: financial period calendars<\/h3>\n<p>another surprising new feature!<\/p>\n<p>financial period calendars allow you to use different financial periods for different projects.<\/p>\n<p>oracle has finally fixed what was a long-time limitation to using financial periods. in case you didn&#8217;t know, financial periods let you store partial updates for activities that span more than an update period.<\/p>\n<p>the limitation was always that the periods, the spans of time between updates that would create a bucket, were set for once for the database. so if one project did monthly updates, and another project did weekly updates, only one of these could use financial periods because they were set globally. there was no way to set periods for each project.<\/p>\n<p>now there is a way with financial period calendars.<\/p>\n<p>a financial period calendar is a construct that allows you to build an periods you like.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-53516\" src=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/p6-2012-financial-period-calendars.jpg\" alt=\"p6 20.12 financial period calendars\" width=\"765\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/p6-2012-financial-period-calendars.jpg 765w, \/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/p6-2012-financial-period-calendars-300x177.jpg 300w, \/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/p6-2012-financial-period-calendars-600x355.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>now we can pick which ones to use on our projects with a new setting at the project level.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-53517\" src=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/p6-2012-financial-period-calendar-project.jpg\" alt=\"p6 20.12 financial period calendar project setting\" width=\"567\" height=\"508\" srcset=\"\/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/p6-2012-financial-period-calendar-project.jpg 567w, \/\/www.deco-dalles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/p6-2012-financial-period-calendar-project-300x269.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 567px) 100vw, 567px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>as more and more projects use resource and cost-loading, financial periods become a real asset in storing partial period performance.<\/p>\n<p>the skinny is that this is a great enhancement in primavera p6 v20.12 that will enable many companies to start using financial periods to their advantage.<\/p>\n<h3>new: better fill-down\u00a0 &amp;
